A look at the most significant labour market for women in Africa was overdue: Agriculture. Women represent a significant part of the workforce in the agrarian sector, producing up to 80% of the food in Sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, women have less access to productive assets such as land, agricultural inputs, skills and capital than men, while also taking on the majority of care work in their households. This is especially critical, as many countries in Africa are witnessing a “feminisation of agriculture” as an increasing number of young men migrate to urban areas.
Against this background, developing innovative solutions that give women access to agricultural technical and vocational training (A-TVET) and build their capacity along the agricultural value chain is fundamental and key in ensuring their economic empowerment as well as better livelihoods. As part of its support to the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) of the African Union, Germany recently launched an A-TVET programme that specifically provides agricultural and vocational training for women in six countries in Africa.
MEP Linda McAvan invited to the Seminar from Field to Parliament (F2P) – Practitioners Answer YOUR Questions: Empowering rural women in Africa: Tailored agricultural vocational training solutions for women with Ousmane Djibo, Manager of the GIZ Sector Project Agricultural Policy and Food Security, Speaker of the Sector Network for Rural Development in Africa from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
Ousmane Djibo is an expert in the field of rural development for more than 15 years. Until recently, he worked as Agribusiness Advisor in Burkina Faso and led the GIZ Regional Programme in Support to CAADP. He came to the European Parliament to answer questions on training for women in agriculture and to share his experience.
