- What: Review and outlook after a one-year pilot phase
Today, digital technologies are an important prerequisite for social, political and economic participation. They also offer new opportunities to empower women and girls in a targeted manner in various areas of their lives. In order to tap this potential, the sector program „Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Rights” launched the GIZ-wide competition “Empowerment of women through digital solutions” at the end of 2016. It called for proposals of measures that use an innovative “digital solution” which specifically strengthens women and girls and helps reduce gender-based discrimination.
The competition triggered a great response and the multitude of proposals clearly showed the tremendous potential of integrating empowering digital solutions in our development cooperation. Eventually, the three following winning measures were selected, financed by the sector program and implemented in 2017:
- Women Plant Doctors 2.0 in Tunisia
- Infotainment app about labour rights for female garment workers in Myanmar
- Fight violence against women through an app in Lesotho
As the pilot phase is coming to an end, we would like to share the Lessons Learnt from the three different contexts and discuss possible ways forward for these digital solutions.
